LUIS POIROT

This renowned professional photographer of Chile was born in Santiago in 1940.  In the year 1959 he got enrolled in the School of Theater, University of Chile and later pursued his studies in France between 1963 and 1964.  The next year he returned to Chile to assume the position of a professional photographer in the national artistic environment, under this theatre.

From the year 1969 to 1973 he taught as a professor of photography in the Catholic University of Chile. Here he thought of migrating again to France. Two years later he established his residence in Barcelona, Spain thus working as a teacher in the International Center of Photography.

The year 1989 saw his return back to Chile so as to work as a professor in the Catholic University. Simultaneously, he continued to work independently and developing photographs in his private workshop. His photography is clearly carried very fundamentally as per the black and white technique.

Principally, his works of art bring out a kind of portraits. With his camera Poirot has very skillfully set a true to life photographic album of figures of the culture of the nation, similar to Víctor Jara, Nicanor Parra and Pablo Neruda. Apart from this Poirot photographed empty spaces, like Castles, houses and buildings.

In his carrier pursuits he has received many important distinctions, the one clearly standing out is The Nikon International Contest, obtained in the years 1968 and 1970. His photography work in the movies "Los Transplantados” (The Transplanted One’s) in the year in 1975 was rewarded in the Film Festival of Thonoules- Bainz of France.

He also received the distinction in the contest of Photo-Press of Spain in the area of  First Portrait of Press and Political Photography.  In the year 1994 he was honoured with the award of Ansel Adams as recognition to his carrier path by the American Chilean Institute of Culture.  He has also carried out important exhibitions in the National Museum of Fine Arts in 1977 thus emphasizing the retrospectives of his work of art and their incorporation in the third phase of the show “Chile:100 years”, carried out in the year 2000 in the same premises. He has published various books:  "Allende, se abren las alamedas” (1991), “Neruda, retratar la ausencia” (1995) , y “El amor de Chile” (1996), among others.

EXHIBITION

The exhibition showcases 27 black and white images and principally portrays the house of Pablo Neruda situated in the Isla Negra (Black Island). He got inclined towards the great poet Pablo Neruda in the year 1969 when he personally came into touch with this great poet. Subsequently in the year 1982, when the widow of the prophet Matilde Urrutia returned to Chile she proposed to Poirot to focus his lens on the house of Pablo Neruda situated in the Isla Negra.

From there appeared all the ghosts of absence and the loneliness and also the enclosed inscriptions which brought to his notice that Chile was certainly a country that recalled.

Amazingly he started to receive magical and exciting histories on Pablo Neruda. For about two years the photographer continued his visits to house of Matilde Urrutia, to the fenced memories and to the amazing witnesses of the Pablo Neruda. Thus, little by little, from one friend to another and from one poem to another, came one book "Retratar la Ausencia” (The Portrayal of Absence). This is the part of the work which will be displayed at the Municipality hall çankaya in the capital city of Turkey, Ankara between October 16-19, 2007.
